British Brigadier General Kenneth Strong, Italian Giuseppe Castellano, US General Walter Bedell Smith (future director of the CIA) and the diplomat Franco Montanari, who had served as translator and interpreter for Castellano, signed the secret armistice that ended Italy’s fight against the Allies in the Second World War.
Following this meeting, President Eisenhower gave the order to cancel the planned attack on Rome with 500 Bombers.
